What do we mean by Mitigation?
Mitigation is a process that involves taking actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere as well as to enhance sinks aimed at reducing the extent of global warming.

Mitigation Options PNG could undertake:

· Changing people’s approach from the use of fossil based energy sources to renewable based energy sources, e.g.. Use of bio-diesel fuels from coconut, oil palm, etc;

· Changing people’s approach to the use of transport mechanisms, e.g. use of greenhouse friendly automobiles, etc;

· Encourage forest management practices and sustainable forest development practices in forest logging areas;

· Give priority to waste management practices in the country;

· Changing people’s approach to individual lifestyle;

· Changing people’s approach to business practices that are greenhouse friendly;

· Creating and developing new technologies that are greenhouse friendly and will help to reduce GHGs emissions;

· Use of carbon sink, carbon credits and taxation to encourage reduce GHG emissions.

 A good example is the established Lihir Geothermal Power Plant in New Ireland Province. The power plant uses renewable energy to mitigate emissions of GHGs into the atmosphere by supplying cleaner power generated from natural steam to replace fossil fuel (petroleum and diesel energy) consumption.
