OCCES donate vehicleOffice of Climate Change and Environment Sustainability (OCC&ES) Executive Director Dr Theo Yasause has donated his private vehicle to the Gerehu Police station in Port Moresby on Saturday (02nd May 2009).

Dr Yasause gave the vehicle to the local police officers as needed under Operation ‘Wok Bung Wantaim’ following his pledge that he had made during the launching of Operation on Friday at the Grand Palace restaurant in Gordons.

The Operation launched by the National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop is geared up towards the participation of the community with the police to enforce law and order.

“We are handing our vehicle over freely as part of the OCC&ES effort in helping the police enforce law and order in Gerehu,” Dr Yasause said.

“Gerehu is a large area with a lot of challenges which we do understand the difficulties that the local police officers face despite their tireless efforts to uphold their constitutional duty. And one factor that they are lacking is mobility.  Thus they are unable to respond in time when need arises.”

Meanwhile a jubilant National Capital District Metropolitan commander Chief Inspector Anderson Bawa said that such assistance is very much appreciated given the limited resources that his men at Gerehu has to enforce law and order. “We have about 30 police officers and only one vehicle. And Gerehu is a big suburb with about 50 000 people.  I’m also challenging businessmen in other suburbs in the city to provide such assistance to their local police stations.”

Mr Bawa also called on the officers not to misuse this vehicle and call on the Gerehu residence to report to him if they see the car been misused.
